Another Wine Blog: Staying home for Valentine’s Day?

  • Papa Lou · 1 year ago
As a city-dweller, we learned the hard way very quickly that Valentine's Day is one to avoid at local restaurants. We usually go out a couple nights later now, as we're not sticklers for celebrating the holiday on the 14th.

No embarrassing Valentine's Day stories to share, other than getting dumped by my girlfriend during the last slow song at my high school's "Cupid's Arrow" dance when I was 17. (It wasn't a shock -- the relationship was waning -- but the timing sure sucked, and I felt like a real tool standing out there on the dance floor by myself after she walked away...)

That sounds like either the end or the beginning of a John Cusack movie. Did she give you a pen?

    Joe,

Yes I agree cook for her at home, farm out the kids, have a wonderful meal, wine, save money and be more intimate. If you have any need for recipes let me know, I have many I cook the main courses though, no desserts hahaha!

    Hi Mark,

Feel free to post recipes in any thread that you think would be appropriate. I will have a new post later today that should fit the bill nicely.

No pen given, nor did I stand outside her house the next day holding a boom box over my head. It was a brief relationship and truth be told, I was losing interest in her as well. Still felt like a dork, though.

On to the thread topic for stay-at-home treats for V-Day... we've always enjoyed hitting the local gourmet grocer for some high-end cocoa to use in a pot of chocolate fondue...

Maybe if you had made fondue for the girl in high school she might not have dumped you. Just a thought.

If you HAD done the boom box thing, my money would have been on Public Enemy instead of Peter Gabriel. ;)

My boyfriend of 11 years told me to read the comments on this page. He has NEVER taken me out on Valentines and is very happy to show me what a scam it is to go out on on that night. However I can't help feeling cheated that I will never sample being taken to a nice restaurant on Valentines. However I'm sure we would have a lousy time as he would be waiting to make a told-you-so comment.

Well Natalia, maybe you should make him read the follow-up column and tell him that you want him to cook for you next Valentine's Day AND take you out to swanky place the following weekend. Sounds like a fair trade-off to me. :)
